LINGACON

Institutional cooperation

Working with institutions is how this research reaches the people who can use it, and how it sustains itself. LINGACON takes no external funding; partnerships are what allow the data to stay open and the next study to be run.

Below is what we offer and what we look for. If your case is not on the list, describe it anyway: this is a young field and useful arrangements are still being worked out.

Measurement and assessment

National assessments for governments and statistical offices

A full L-MAS Level 3 or Level 4 assessment produces publication-quality national ALPS data with confidence intervals, regional breakdown, and connectivity analysis. LINGACON designs the instrument, supports sampling, trains enumerators where needed, and delivers the analysis.

If your office already runs a census or a regular household survey, adding a single standardized question yields a comparable national figure at little additional cost. We provide the wording and the analysis; you keep the data.

Companies, cities, and regions

For multinational employers: how multilingual is your workforce, and where exactly does communication break down between your offices? For municipalities and regions: which languages does your population actually speak, and are your public services, schools, and emergency communications reaching them?

Both are delivered as an ALPS score plus a connectivity analysis, benchmarked against comparable countries or organizations, with the underlying data handed over to you.

Longitudinal tracking

A single measurement is a snapshot. Repeating it on a defined cycle turns it into evidence: whether a language-education policy worked, whether an integration programme changed anything, whether international expansion actually raised your organization's internal connectivity. This is L-MAS Level 5, run as a standing arrangement.

Data and technology

Data licensing

The data and code behind the papers, including the row-level data and the pair table, are open on the Open Science Framework under the licences stated there. Sub-national and regional breakdowns, named country-group aggregates, and uses the deposit licences do not cover can be arranged separately.

Planned

API access

Programmatic access to ALPS, connectivity data and country profiles, for partners who want the indices inside their own tools. The API is planned as part of Linguistic Planet; organizations interested in early access are welcome to say so now, while the interface can still be shaped around real use cases.

Custom country and regional reports

A commissioned report on a specific country, region, or group of countries: the full linguistic profile, the connectivity picture inside and outward, comparison with peers, and the implications for whatever question prompted it.

Research and visibility

Joint and sponsored research

Several studies on our agenda are designed and waiting on resources: measuring every US state separately, mapping India's internal connectivity, and examining how far Mandarin reaches beyond China's borders. An institution, foundation, or company can underwrite one of these and see it published openly, with the sponsor acknowledged and the findings free for everyone.

Academic collaboration works the same way in the other direction: if your team is working on language demography, communication networks, or migration, our data and methodology are open to joint work.

Sponsorship on Linguistic Planet

Once Linguistic Planet is live, sponsorship placements there are planned for organizations working with languages, such as language schools, publishers, translation services, universities and cultural institutions. They will be kept clearly separate from the research.

Media, education, and expert commentary

Journalists and data desks are welcome to use published figures with attribution, and we are glad to explain what a number does and does not support before it appears in print. Universities and educational publishers can license the datasets and visual materials for teaching.

Get in touch

Tell us who you are, what you want to know, and on what timeline. For assessments it helps to know the population or headcount involved and how linguistically diverse you expect it to be; diversity, more than size, determines the scope of the work.
